Hi, I'm Marion Owen, a veteran, in-the-trenches gardener and composter since 1985.
I've written a weekly organic garden column for 25 years and helped
thousands of gardeners, small-scale farmers, beginners, and certified master gardeners replace all the confusing composting information out there with a proven method to make compost quickly so they can realize the garden of their dreams.
But I wasn't born a gardener...
I moved to Alaska in 1984. In no time, I wanted to grow some of my own food. I raised a few seedlings. I planted. I watered. I failed.
I read all the books at the library. And I kept coming across the term 'compost.' Curious, I turned to the Cooperative Extension Service for help. They said it would take 5 years to make compost!
Then I discovered a little-known method of making compost that was developed over 100 years ago... I figured I had nothing to lose.
A few days later, I grabbed a pitchfork and turned my compost. A cloud of steam rose up. It was HOT! it worked! In June, I harvested a bounty of lettuce, broccoli, and all kinds of other veggies.
Turning my first compost pile was a turning point in my life...
During the last record-setting heatwave, the plants growing in compost-rich soil did far better than everything else.
